What I’m about to say might be controversial.
And I am, in no way, meaning to make light of the Coronavirus situation. A few of my friends are sick with this disease right now. It’s no joke.
However, there’s no denying that this could be an opportunity.
Do you remember that ancient parable?
An elderly old farmer lived with his only son. Together, they literally lived a hand-to-mouth existence, working hard all day, with just one horse to help them plow the fields, sow the seeds, transport crops, etc.
One day, though, the horse bolted.
It jumped the fence and ran away into the forest. And, just a week before it was time to plow, the farmer and his son no longer had a horse.
Their neighbors were devastated for them.
“What terrible luck! And just before plowing season. Heaven help us!”
The farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck… who really knows?”
A few days later, the horse returned. And with it followed two more wild horses. Now, the farmer and son had a horse each, with one to sell.
Said the neighbors: “What incredible luck! You can use the money to buy more land, and with two horses you’ll be able to reap twice the crops.”
“Good luck, bad luck… who really knows?”
A few months later, the farmer’s son broke his leg. He was attempting to train one of the wild horses and it threw him. Now, he couldn’t work — and his poor old father had to tend to two fields alone, while caring for his crippled son.
“What rotten luck!”, a neighbor consoled. “That a gift so sweet should turn out to be a curse. If only those wild horses had never found you!”
“Good luck, bad luck… who really knows?”
A few days later, the king’s men visited the village. War had just broken out. They were under orders to conscript the eldest son of every family.
Only the farmer’s crippled son was spared.
Sometimes, what seems like a curse turns out to be a gift. Or, at least, an opportunity. And it’s often not until long after the fact that we know.
For, after more than a year, the villagers’ sons returned.
Triumphant, decorated, and handsomely rewarded for their bravery and victory over the kingdom’s enemies. And as the entire village feasted and celebrated, the poor farmer’s son — who was no longer a cripple — cursed that he couldn’t be there, standing alongside his brothers in their glory.
Dark days lie ahead of us. At least for now.
But then what?
Many of the people who have spent the last six months locked inside together will file for divorce. Estates of those passed away will need to be transferred. Wills will be disputed. Businesses will file for bankruptcy. Folks will sue for services they never received. The world will keep on turning.
Depending on your practice area, your world may even turn a lot faster when this storm passes. Demand for your services may suddenly increase a lot.
You see how folks are standing in line to buy toilet paper? Call me an optimist, but in six months I think a lot of them will be standing in line to file for divorce, or settle their parents’ estate, or file for bankruptcy.
Now is the time to invest in building your position as an authority.
And what better way to start than by authoring a book? The next few months are going to pass anyway, no matter how you feel about them or how many clients you’re able to take on. Why not use this time to get a head start?
Our Speak-a-Book service is entirely phone-based.
All it requires from you is 2-3 hours of time spent answering interview questions. We’ll turn your answers into a polished book that you can use to position yourself as an authority in your metro/practice area. One that is 100% your own work. A book that will help you attract all these new cases.
